Close to 100 people attended Central Pacific Collective's (CPC) Open Fale event at Castor Crescent, Porirua, on Saturday 22 August, stepping inside a housing development that is creating new pathways to homeownership for Pacific families in Aotearoa.

The event gave prospective homeowners the opportunity to explore the homes, experience the village layout and learn more about the innovative housing model being delivered through Stages 1.2 and 1.3 of the Our Whare Our Fale (OWOF) programme.

Visitors toured homes ranging from two to five bedrooms and saw firsthand how the development has been shaped by Pacific values and community aspirations.

Among them was Mana College’s Assistant Principal Filisione Koloamatangi.

"I love the sense of community created by how the homes are set up. The design and the space within these homes are phenomenal," he said.

Raymond Carroll attended last year's Open Fale event forStage 1.1 and returned this year because his whānau felt ready to take the next step.

Skivi, a builder who worked on the homes, brought his parents along to the viewing and said the experience was especially meaningful.

"It was cool seeing their reaction and showing them what I do for work, but also showing them what could potentially be theirs one day," he said.

Victor and Alana from Cannons Creek said walking through the homes made things feel more tangible.

"It makes it a bit more real for us, thinking about homeownership for our family," Alana said. "I also love the open-plan design. It doesn't feel enclosed."

Central Pacific Collective CEO Fa’amatuainu Tino Pereira said the turnout was a reminder of why CPC exists.

"We know Pasefika families aspire to homeownership, yet it has historically been out of reach for many. Our role is to create practical pathways that make it possible. Initiatives like Our Whare Our Fale create the conditions for Pasefika communities to thrive on their own terms," hesaid.

OWOF is the first housing development of its kind in Aotearoa, delivering affordable, intergenerational homes by Pasefika, for Pasefika. Stage 1, Mua i Malae, delivered 18 homes and was completed ahead of schedule and under budget in December last year. Stages 1.2 and 1.3 will see 32 homes completed by the end of 2026.

Elyjana Roach, Director Development & Regeneration, said it was inspiring to see the turnout and to welcome so many people through the village.

“The feedback we got from people attending the Open Fale was that they could see their community values reflected in the way the homes are designed to be spacious enough for intergenerational living, and in the way the village is designed to bring communities together."

She said the development reflects CPC's wider commitment to improving housing outcomes and creating the foundations for long-term social, cultural and economic wellbeing for Pasefika communities in the Wellington region.

Roach said the regional interest was evident at the Open Fale event.

"We have had interest from families outside Porirua, and that is encouraging," she said. "We have homes available and we definitely want to hear from more people across the wider region, whether they are in the Hutt Valley, Wainuiomata or the Wairarapa."
